Founded in 1835, Beaumont, Texas had an early history as a lumber and rice mill town. It helped establish rice as a commodity crop that is now cultivated in 23 Texas counties. A major change in the local economy occurred in 1901 with the Spindletop Gusher, which started the oil boom in southeast Texas. Beaumont is now the home to several energy companies and is one of the largest petrochemical refining areas in the country.
